Little River Lighthouse

Little River Lighthouse, perched on Little River Island at the entrance to Cutler Harbor, Maine, was first established in 1847 to aid the growing maritime industries of the area. The current 41-foot cast iron tower, lined with brick, was constructed in 1876 and remains one of the few of its kind in Maine. Accompanied by a Victorian-style keeper’s house built in 1888, the lighthouse served as a vital navigational aid until it was automated in 1975, leading to a period of deactivation. After years of neglect, the American Lighthouse Foundation undertook restoration efforts, culminating in the relighting of the beacon in 2001. Today, the lighthouse stands as an active aid to navigation and offers overnight stays during the summer months, providing visitors with a unique glimpse into Maine’s maritime heritage.
