Eating Real Maine Potato Donuts at The Holy Donut

If you’re in the Portland, Maine area, we absolutely recommend stopping in for a donut at The Holy Donut. Last fall, our toddler and I headed into the Old Port to check out The Holy Donut’s Exchange Street location* for the first time. This location is on one of the cutest streets in the Old Port (in my opinion) and has a cozy, friendly atmosphere the moment you walk through the door.

*Update: The Exchange Street location has moved to Commercial Street!

After staring at all the donut options for what felt like an eternity, we decided to try the Maine Apple and the Dark Chocolate with Sea Salt donuts (as recommended by their awesome staff!) and both were phenomenal. I believe their Maine Apple is a seasonal donut since I don’t remember it being there on our most recent visit last month. But the Dark Chocolate with Sea Salt is there year-round and is one of their top sellers!

Local Ingredients

So what makes these donuts different from every other donut out there? Well, these donuts are made with fresh Maine potatoes! Have you ever had a donut made from potatoes? Probably not.

Every donut is hand cut and is made from 100% local ingredients. They’re a much healthier alternative to other donuts found at various chains which is part of what makes them such a hit!

In addition to using fresh Maine potatoes, The Holy Donut also includes the highest quality dark cocoa powder in all chocolate donuts and glazes and colors their glazes with vegetable dyes or fruit juices. No fake colors here!

Since these donuts are so well-loved by the community and those who visit, The Holy Donut typically sells out of donuts each day. But when they do have leftovers, they donate them to organizations such as the Preble Street Resource Center. They love giving back to the community in any way they can which is something I really love about them.

Pro Tip: Since The Holy Donut is known for selling out of donuts, be sure to plan your visit prior to noon so you have a higher chance of getting your favorite flavors!
