Maine Lighthouse Directory
Maine is home to over 60 historical lighthouses!
And we’re on a mission to visit every single one of them so we can give you a full guide based on first-hand experiences as well as our tips for seeing them with kids!
Originally, the lighthouses were erected to serve as an aid to ships, warning mariners of hazards and guiding them to their destinations. Today these lighthouses have become icons of Maine, with visitors from all over the world traveling to see them.
Most of Maine’s lighthouses are open to the public and some even have access to the keeper’s quarters as well as adjacent museums. While most of the lighthouses can be viewed from land, others are best viewed by boat (and Maine has plenty of lighthouse tours available!).
If you’re looking for a great way to view multiple lighthouses in one day, we highly recommend checking out Maine Open Lighthouse Day which occurs in early September every year. This gives the public the opportunity to explore more than 20 historic lighthouses (many of which are only open on this day!). It’s a rare and unique experience we recommend everyone take advantage of!
